Get A Mentor. Heck, Get 10.
Working Girl tries to read the Wall St. Journal (so you don’t have to). It hasn’t been easy of late. Credit-swap derivatives? Yikes.
What’s scarier? Not understanding our financial system, or discovering that even the people who run our financial system don’t understand our financial system?
Anyway, an upbeat piece on a “New Approach to Mentoring” caught WG’s eye. The gist: It’s good to have a mentor. So good that you should have more than one. In fact, you need, “developmental networks instead–a small group of people to whom you can turn for regular mentoring support and who have a genuine interest in your learning and development.”
WG nods head in agreement. After all, this is exactly what she writes in The Book. How prescient of the WSJ. Then she reads: “Think of it as your personal board of directors.”
Hey! That’s word for word what The Book says. It can’t be plagiarism (The Book won’t come out till next April). It must be. . . . .what?
Industrial espionage? A leak in the WG firewall? Pixies?
Or, most likely, just that common sense is universal. Whatever. The Book isn’t out yet. So if you need a good primer on mentors, you’ll have to rely on the good old WSJ. There’s even a video interview.

Hey Karen, I think this is an awesome idea, but how does one go about getting a mentor? In college I was assigned one and he was horrible and I’ve never had one since.

I’ve always loved the idea of a mentor! seems I’m always one for others. But Ive noticed they’re typically for students. I’m 30. Plus, what kind of mentor, if any, does one look to find if they have no idea which direction they want to go in??
