Is “Admin” A Good Career Track?
Last week, almostgotit faced a temporary quandary (it’s here & it’s funny) about taking an (unwanted) position as an administrative assitant.
It reminded Working Girl of her own admin years and how truly difficult it was to get out of the secretarial pool, don her first dress-for-success suit, and tip toe–still dripping–into the ranks of lower-lower middle management. (WG didn’t enjoy secretarial tasks. But she recognizes they’re a vital function in most companies.)
Which brings us to the Question Of The Day: Can taking an admin position ever be an entrée to “bigger” things?
Eilene Zimmerman writing in the NYT tackled this topic on Sunday. The highlights:
- A recent survey said that admins “have more of a career-growth track than they did five years ago.”
- Two of the best fields for admins seeking advancement are marketing and human resources.
- You’re going to have to stick to your admin duties, and do them well, at least six months before trying to expand.
- Let your boss know right from the start that you look on your admin career as only a means to an end.
In this day and age, it may be important to take whatever job you can get. Admin may well be your ticket. For more tips, click on over here.

Thanks for the link, Working Girl!
I did recently meet a person who had worked her way up to a high position from an administrative position… and yes, it was in Marketing.
Of course, the other person who comes to mind is MIT’s Dean of Admissions, the infamous Marilee Jones…
I started at a company as an admin assistant and moved up in the company when I jumped to fill an open role. It IS possible!
